Upgrade Issues

Windows Vista and Windows 7 - Upgrading from 8.x to 9.x

If you are currently using version 8.x and upgrading to the Microsoft Windows Vista or in Windows 7 operating system, it is strongly recommended that you re-install with a Windows Vista / Window 7-compatible FliteStar program CD and Electronic Chart Data CD. If you keep the existing directory structure through the upgrade to Vista/7, the update installer cannot find the necessary files in the new directory locations, and the updates will fail.

Before migrating to version 9.x, there are several files that you might want to save to a USB memory device or other location:

After you have installed FliteStar on the machine using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can place the saved files to the new locations identified in the topic Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 Folders. You can place your route files (*.fcf) in a location of your choice. If you place them in the C:\Users\[user profile]\Jeppesen\Common\RoutePack folder, they will automatically be converted to RoutePack files (.rpk). When you open the route file, FliteStar shows some options and then automatically converts it to a RoutePack file (*.rpk). The old route (*.fcf) file is discarded. Keep a separate copy of your original (*.fcf) files, because FliteStar will not keep any copies of these files in the RoutePack folder after converting them to RoutePacks.

Sorry, you cannot save RoutePacks, routes, or aircraft data for use with FliteStar/FliteMap version 8 after using version 9.x.

If you would prefer, you can save your RoutePacks in a location other than the default location, and FliteStar will remember that location.

Windows XP - Upgrading from 8.x to 9.x

Windows 2000 is not supported as of 2009.

To upgrade your FliteStar 8.x to 9.x, make sure you have the FliteStar Electronic Chart Data CD-ROM and follow the steps below. If you are upgrading to 9.x from a version earlier than 8.x, see Upgrade Issues.

FliteStar version 9 tries to locate any saved route files from previous versions (*.fcf), and copy them into the C:\jeppesen\common\RoutePack folder. When you open the route file, FliteStar shows some options and then automatically converts it to a RoutePack file (*.rpk). The old route (*.fcf) file is discarded.

If you saved your FliteStar version 8 routes in a folder other than the default folder, FliteStar may not find them. In this case, use Windows Explorer to copy your routes to the RoutePack folder. Keep your original (*.fcf) files because FliteStar will not keep any copies of these files in the RoutePack folder after converting them to RoutePacks.

Sorry, you cannot save RoutePacks, routes, or aircraft data for use with FliteStar/FliteMap version 8.

If you would prefer, you can save your RoutePacks in a location other than the default location, and FliteStar will remember that location.

Do not uninstall or delete FliteStar 8.x from your computer. If you do, all personal data such as waypoints, routes, aircraft configurations, and pilot data may be lost.

  1. The following is a list of several files that you might want to save to another folder:

  1. Insert the Electronic Chart Data CD into your CD-ROM drive. If the ECD Disc does not start automatically, click Start > Run and enter d:\ setup.exe (where d: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).

  1. In the Welcome dialog box, click Next.

  1. Review the installation summary and click Next to begin the installation. The installation may take a few minutes to complete.

  2. Follow the remaining screens to finish the installation.

WARNING Electronic Chart Data should be updated every 28 days to keep the information current. See the Updating section for more information.
