Installing Updates

NOTE Jeppesen NavData® is also referred to as Jeppesen Electronic Chart Data. You might see references to either NavData or to Electronic Chart Data within FliteStar.

You receive a 30-day free trial period for both Electronic Chart Data updates and program upgrades through the Internet when FliteStar is installed for the first time. You must activate FliteStar during the first 30 days to continue using the program.

After the 30-day period expires, an Electronic Chart Data subscription is necessary to maintain data currency. To purchase an update service, call Customer Service.

NOTE If you are a NavSuite user, downloading the Electronic Chart Data in FliteStar also updates the data in the other NavSuite products on the same computer.

Administrative Permissions

The initial installation of FliteStar requires full administrative privileges.

Permission to access the Jeppesen folder(s) is required when program updates become available, whether electronically or on CD.

Permission to access the Program Data folder is required for navigational data updates.

Update Method Overview

Electronic Chart Data can be updated with a CD-ROM subscription or by using the online method. The following provides a brief overview of each option:

  1. Updating Electronic Chart Data with a CD-ROM subscription service:

  1. Online retrieval of Electronic Chart Data:

  1. The UpdatePack allows you to update your entire subscription on one machine, and then transfer the updated information to other computers via USB memory device. UpdatePacks provide an easy way to copy Jeppesen programs and data from one machine to another for those with multiple machines. See The UpdatePack topic for additional information.

CD Updates

If you subscribe to a FliteStar CD revision service, you will receive an Electronic Chart Data (ECD) Disc every 28 days with updated enroute chart data and the FliteStar program. To update your program using a CD with a standard installation, use the following procedure for each computer on which FliteStar is installed:

  1. Insert the ECD Disc into your CD-ROM. If the ECD Disc installation does not start, click Start > Run and enter d:\ setup.exe (where d: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).

  2. In the Welcome to the Electronic Chart Data Installer screen, click Next.

  3. The ECD Disc installs updates to the FliteStar application and the navigational information.

  4. In the Installation Options dialog, indicate whether you want to view the readme file, then click Next.

  5. If necessary, click Next in the dialog box that displays the readme file.

  6. In the InstallShield Wizard Complete window, indicate whether you will restart your computer now or later, then click Finish.

NOTE The latest ECD disc contains all enroute and program updates. If you missed a few revisions, you do not need to install all the ECD discs; you just need to install the latest available.

Updating via the Internet

To update your FliteStar program and data online:

  1. Connect to the Internet.

  2. In FliteStar, click Get Update on the Warning that displays when FliteStar opens, or click File > Check for Updates.

  3. If the UpdateClient presents a list of programs, select FliteStar or FliteMap.

NOTE If you have more than one Jeppesen software application that uses the activation system, a dialog box appears asking which product you would like to check for updates. Select FliteStar and click OK.
  1. When your program information displays (serial number, site key, and site code), click Next.

The UpdateClient connects to the Jeppesen server, checks your connection, and compares your current data to the most recent data available on the server.

  1. In the Select Update Option dialog box, select each item you would like to update.

If you already have the latest of any data set, the option for that item is grayed out, and you cannot select it. The notes at the bottom of the Select Update Option dialog box indicate whether you have the latest version of each data set.

  1. After you have made your selections, click OK.

  2. If you have downloaded a FliteDeck update in the past, a message appears asking if you would like to delete all downloads older than ten days. Click Yes to delete any previously downloaded updates older than ten days located in one of the following folders which depends on your setup and operating system:

The download folder is used automatically by the UpdateClient to save the downloaded data to your hard drive and install the update on your computer.

NOTE Microsoft's Vista/7® User Account Control requires you to give permission for the update Setup to open. The UAC permissions dialog times out after two minutes. If you step away from your computer at this point in the update process and the Setup disappears, manually restart the Setup and click through the UAC dialog to continue.
  1. If FliteStar is open, the UpdateClient automatically closes FliteStar and begins installing the new data.

  2. Follow the prompts on the remaining installation windows.

The Update Agent has its own Help file with explanations and instructions for the error messages.

WARNING Electronic Chart Data (NavData) expires every 28 days. In the interest of flight safety, it is very important that you maintain current NavData. Contact Jeppesen to obtain a convenient revision service for your NavData.
IMPORTANT Save the program CD! You must have this CD and the associated serial number to reinstall the program on a new machine! NavData revisions contain all program updates, but do not include the entire program.
